FairviewLogoThe Weekly Buzz: Welcome, Fairview Health Services!

The Action Group is pleased to announce that Fairview Health Services is now a member. Several Fairview staff members were instrumental in organizing and participating in last month’s ACO employer discussion, and we look forward to their ongoing participation.

In a departure from other industry polls, employers said they plan to reject private exchanges as a way to control rising health care costs, according to a new survey of more than 330 employers sponsored in part by the National Business Coalition on Health.

More than half (55%) of respondents indicate they will “never” stop sponsoring employee health plans in favor of giving employees money to buy coverage through a private exchange. Almost one-third (32%) said they are considering moving to a private exchange within 3-5 years, 8% are considering such a move within the next three years, and just 5% say they already use a private exchange to provide employees’ health benefits.

In honor of World Diabetes Day, Novo Nordisk, JDRF, American Diabetes Association, and other community health care professionals have united to introduce the inaugural Diabetes Awareness Summit at Mall of America from November 13-15, 2014.

Further demonstrating its commitment to the treatment and prevention of diabetes through employer-sponsored initiatives, The Action Group is bringing employers and other key stakeholders together to share best practices about workplace solutions. We are proud to be hosting an employer diabetes event on November 13, focused on how you can take action on behalf of your employees to improve health and lower costs. We welcome members and non-members and there is no cost to attend.

Norma Streich and Melissa Vaughn of The Schwan Food Company are among the dynamic line-up of speakers. In 2012 and 2013, Schwan’s was recognized by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal as one of the Healthiest Employers, and won the Silver Health at Work Award, sponsored by ComPsych Resources. exchangeSpecialty Medications and Health Insurance Exchange Enrollees

Health Insurance Exchange enrollees fill 59 percent more prescriptions for specialty medications than other insured individuals, according to the new Exchange Pulse Survey™ from Express Scripts. The disparity is especially pronounced in Exchange enrollees ages 18-34, with nearly three out of five specialty prescriptions for HIV medication.

“Despite accounting for only 1.3 percent of total pharmacy claims, specialty medications consume 38 percent of the total pharmacy spend for Exchange plans.”

Thought for the Week

“In 10 years, I have no doubt that your doctor will recommend a digital program for your depression instead of, or in addition to, a pill. Your treatment for insomnia, kidney stones, or lower back pain might be centered around an iOS app. We can clearly see a future where a doctor’s prescription sends you to an immersive digital experience as often as it does to a pharmacy.”
